Clan MacLaren has, along with MacGregor, Ferguson, and MacNab, occupied the lands in Balquhidder and Strathearn since the 12th Century, where they were the predominant clan. The name derived from Labhran (Laurin) of Ardveche who was hereditary Abbot of Achtus in Balquhidder in the 13th Century.
In "Redgauntlet" Sir Walter Scott describes the escape of MacLaren of Invernenty after Culloden. Scott visited Balquhidder, Loch Katrine and other parts of the Trossaachs. The Stewarts of Balquhidder, including the principal families of Ardvorlich, Glen Buckie, Gartnafuaran, and Annat and their cadets, lived in the areas of Balquhidder, Callander & the Trossachs, Loch Earn and as far south as the Blair Drummond Moss and Stirling from the 15th century to the present. They were tacksmen or land holders under the Earls and Dukes of Atholl, Perth, Tullibardine, Moray and others. Detailed information about the history of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, Glenbuckie, Ardvorlich and Annat is available from The Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group, which was founded by Chuck Speed and Ryk Brown, respectively the descendants of Patrick Stewart of Ledcreich of Balquhidder and Robert Stewart in St. Fillans, of the Stewarts of Dalveich. |
