Local Attractions

FISHING  2 miles of trout fishing (fly, spinner or worm) is available free to guests on our stretch of the river Balvaig, but rods are not provided.  Bait and tackle can be purchased at the Post Office in Lochearnhead or the fishing shop in Callander.

CYCLING
The single track lane immediately in front of our property forms part of the National Cycleway (SUSTRANS), which runs between Callander and Killin in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. There are two mountain bike hire shops in Callander, and the cycle path runs from Callander to Balquhidder along a disused railway line by the side of Loch Lubnaig.

WALKING and HILLCLIMBING  We are surrounded by the hills, which is ideal for walkers.  Loch Voil is just a few minutes walk from here, and we really do have “views to die for”.

GOLF Scotland is renowned for its golf courses and Perthshire is no exception.

There are over 30 golf courses within an hours drive from Balquhidder, ranging from championship courses, such as Gleneagles, Blairgowrie, through to 18 hole courses which include Crieff, Dunblane and Callander, to charming 9 hole courses, such as St. Fillans, Comrie, Muthil and Killin.

Whilst the 9 hole courses can provide a good challenge to the better golfer, they are also ideal for the novice player, not requiring a handicap certificate.
My husband (6 handicapper) and I both play at St. Fillans, and can thoroughly recommend both the course and the hospitality.  The scenery is absolutely  stunning – “Perthshire’s hidden gem”.

Most of these courses offer 5 day discounts or are part of either a “Highland Golf Ticket”, or “Tee-Off in the Park”, or the “Perthshire Green Card, (18 hole courses)” which in turn offer discounts against the full green fee.

EATING OUT
There are places to eat in Strathyre
and Lochearnhead which we can recommend.

In Balquhidder we have the Kingshouse Hotel and Bar, and the renowned Monachyle Mhor Restaurant.

LOCAL SHOPS
The local villages of Lochearnhead and Strathyre have well stocked general shops with Post Offices, and Callander has two small supermarkets.
